LEED for Homes
We are supporting LEED-H via a Cooperative Agreement with Davis Energy Group - the USGBC-designated LEED-H provider in CA and N. Nevada. Through this agreement we are providing training and support to interested LEED-H builders and allied Green Building professionals. The goal is to maximize the number of homes built to LEED-H standards in EPA Region 9. The LEED-H standards include a requirement for builders to do a minimum of EPA Energy STAR measures and has additional credits available for building to the EPA Energy STAR Indoor Air Package specifications. Energy savings, water savings, pounds of pollution reduced and dollars saved are being collected and reported.

The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Database
CHPS will develop a professional, web-based, and searchable materials database and labeling program for its green building rating program for K-12 schools to promote high performance design, construction and operation.

National Association of Minority Contractors of Arizona - Construction and Demolition Debris Diversion Project
This grant project targets 60% diversion of construction and demolition waste during renovations and new residential construction in Arizona. The project will provide recycling training to construction contractors and expand construction and demolition debris recycling capacity in the metro-Phoenix area.

Lifecycle Building Challenge 2
A national competition for students and professionals to develop new ideas on designing buildings and policies for adaptability and disassembly to support local reuse, reduce waste, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. The Challenge is sponsored by EPA Region 9, the Building Materials Reuse Association, and the American Institute of Architects.

Tribal Green Building - Global Green USA
The nonprofit Global Green USA partnered with the Yerington Paiute Tribal Housing Authority to incorporate green building materials and strategies in the planned rehabilitation of existing housing and a future construction project of a multi-unit residential building.

City of Fresno Green Affordable Housing
The City of Fresno in partnership with U. S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is constructing six single family homes using green building practices. The homes feature solar photovoltaic panels, advanced insulation, permeable concrete, and other strategies to reduce energy and water consumption. The project is monitoring its reduced construction and demolition debris and diverted 6.35 tons on their first home. The City of Fresno's website includes a video highlighting the green building features of the homes.

The ReUse People

The ReUse People of America, Inc., Building Materials Reuse Retail Warehouse
This project will open and operate a building materials reuse retail warehouse in the City of Los Angeles. Best practices for operating a retail reuse warehouse and tons of material diverted through deconstruction and reuse activities are being developed.

SF GreenPRINT Green Building Measurement Tool
The Green Building Project Reporting and Information Tool (SF GreenPRINT) is a web-based database that calculates the environmental and economic benefits of single and multiple U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building projects. The database can be adapted for use by other public agencies.

Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART), Sustainable Transit Leadership
The project focused on incorporating green building design and practices for transit-specific applications. BART "greened" all Facility Standards; successfully piloted a ballasted lighting energy savings technology in parking garages for a 25% lighting energy savings; required 70% of construction waste, 100% of concrete and steel demolition debris, and 50% of remaining demolition debris to be diverted from landfill; and has documented cost savings of over $711,000.

Conservation District of Southern Nevada Straw Bale Demonstration Classroom
The District in partnership with the Moapa School District is designing and building a 20'x20' straw bale classroom at the Moapa High School Sustainable Agriculture Farm. This structure will be used primarily to provide an example of green building, thereby stimulating student interest in energy efficient structures. The classroom will also serve as a host to a variety of resource conservation workshops for the local and urban (Las Vegas) communities. Accompanying the straw bale classroom, a native demonstration garden is being developed, showcasing native plants in a garden designed in an environmentally conscious way. Most of the materials for building the classroom have been donated by the community and students have been involved in all steps of the construction.

Old Maui High School Green Historic Renovation
Through a Congressional Appropriations Grant, Community Work Day Program, a non profit group based in Maui, Hawaii was able to preserve and revitalize the historic Old Maui High School. The group ensured the preservation, safety and environmentally sound reconstruction of the High School Administration Building, to provide for its adaptive re-use as a community resource center. The project ensured that, rather than demolition and subsequent landfill impact, the historic building was recycled and reused to the highest degree possible to benefit the Maui community. During the project, the grantee ensured the highest possible amount of recycling of usable structural materials, the composting of appropriate debris and green waste through on-site composting; and the investigation of reconstruction options as well as the study of the social, cultural and historic components relative to the reconstruction and adaptive re-use of the building.

Chartwell School, Design for Deconstruction Manual
Chartwell School is a LEED Platinum K-8 school that educates children with dyslexia and related language learning disabilities. The project provides a model and developed a handbook demonstrating design for adaptability concepts such as centralized utility raceways, cold joint sidewalks, nail-free paneling, and clip in window assemblies.

Stardust Non-Profit Building Supplies, Inc., Residential Deconstruction Program
Stardust, a non-profit in Phoenix, Arizona that focuses on re-using materials to benefit the needy, developed a formal program and manual of best practices for deconstructing and recovering reusable construction and home improvement materials from residential properties.
