Abstract: The close relationship between island cultures, food production systems, and the island ecosystem has faded with the availability of new inputs and options; while the need for better management of natural resources is increasing. One of the more helpful applications of the tools of science would be the development of an overview of the relationship between indigenous and modern technologies of resource- use, and the island's natural resource base. Such a framework would help evaluate traditional, modern and perhaps neotraditional options for optimizing land use. This paper presents such a framework and shows how it could be used for sustainable agricultural development on Yap island. It concludes with an example of a traditional production system which is both productive and sustainable.
