R9 Laboratory SOP 1020
FATHEAD MINNOW, PIMEPHALES PROMELAS, SURVIVAL AND GROWTH TEST
Summary
This SOP describes methods for measuring the chronic, short-term adverse effects of effluents or receiving waters on the fish, Pimephales promelas, during a 7-day static-renewal exposure. This method has been written following the EPA method 1000.0 from the manual ""Short-Term Methods for Estimating the Chronic Toxicity of Effluents and Receiving Waters to Freshwater Organisms}", EPA/600/4-91/002, July 1994.
These procedures are also suitable to freshwater containing chemicals of known or unknown dilutions.
Daily observations on mortality permit the calculation of acute toxicity at other exposure periods(i.e. 24-h, 48 h)
Less than 24 hour old larval fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas are exposed in a static renewal system to different concentrations of effluents, or receiving waters for a seven day period. Test results are based on survival and growth, as measured by the mean dry weight of surviving adult.
