R9 Laboratory SOP 1021
DAPHNID, CERIODAPHNIA DUBIA, SURVIVAL AND REPRODUCTION TEST
Summary
This SOP describes methods for measuring the chronic, short-term adverse effects of effluents or receiving waters on cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia dubia during a 7-day static-renewal exposure. This method has been written following the EPA method 1002.0 from the manual "Short-Term Methods for Estimating the Chronic Toxicity of Effluents and Receiving Waters to Freshwater Organisms", EPA/600/4-91/002, July 1994.
These procedures are also suitable to freshwater containing chemicals of known or unknown dilutions. Daily observations on mortality permit the calculation of acute toxicity at other exposure periods(i.e. 24-h, 48 h)
Less than 24 hour old Ceriodaphnia dubia are exposed in a static renewal system to different concentrations of effluents, or receiving waters for a seven day period. Test results are based on survival and reproduction, as measured by the number of young produced per surviving adult.
