R9 Laboratory SOP 1030

FATHEAD MINNOW, PIMEPHALES PROMELAS, ACUTE SURVIVAL TEST

Summary

This SOP describes methods for measuring the acute, short-term adverse effects of effluents or receiving waters on the fish, Pimephales promelas, during a 48 or 96 hour static-renewal exposure. This method has been written following the EPA method manual Methods for Measuring the Acute Toxicity of Effluents and Receiving Waters to Freshwater and Marine Organisms (Fourth Edition), EPA/600/4-90/027F.

These procedures are also suitable for testing freshwater containing chemicals of known or unknown dilutions. Daily observations on mortality permit the calculation of acute toxicity at other exposure periods(i.e. 24-h, 48 h)

1 to 14 day old larval fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas are exposed in a static or static renewal system to different concentrations of effluents, or receiving waters for a seven day period. Test results are based on survival.
