Region 9 Laboratory SOP 280

TPH Extraction Using ASE

Summary

This SOP describes the procedures used to extract hydrocarbon fuels or oils from solid samples using pressurized fluid extraction. This SOP is based on procedures in SW-846 method 3545, Pressurized Fluid Extraction, Revision 0, December 1996.

A measured weight of sample, 20 - 30g, is mixed with anhydrous sodium sulfate and loaded into the extraction cell, spiked with surrogates, and extracted with 1:1 methylene chloride/acetone using elevated temperature (100°C), elevated pressure (1750 psi) by the Dionex ASE 200 Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE).The extract is dried with sodium sulfate and concentrated to 2 mL using nitrogen blowdown technique. The extract is analyzed by GC with a flame ionization detector as documented in SOP #385.
