R9 Laboratory SOP 350

Analysis of EDB and DBCP in Water by Microextraction and Gas Chromatography

Summary

This standard operating procedure (SOP) is applicable to the determination of 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB) and 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) in drinking water and groundwater in the concentration range of 0.05 μg/L to 10 μg/L. This SOP uses USEPA Method 504.1, Revision 1.1, 1995 as a reference method. 1,2,3- Trichloropropane will not be analyzed using this SOP.

Thirty-five mL of sample are extracted with 2 mL of hexane. One microliter (μL) of the extract is injected into each of two gas chromatographic (GC) analytical columns with electron capture detectors (ECDs) with dissimilar characteristics to provide concurrent confirmation analysis.

Aqueous calibration standards are extracted and analyzed in an identical manner as samples. A computerized chromatography data system is used to control the gas chromatograph and to collect and process data.
