In June of 2004, EPA established a Southern California Field Office in downtown Los Angeles to more effectively manage environmental programs, projects, and issues in southern California. The Counties of Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego, along with the western portions of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, taken together represent a large and significant constituency.
Among the environmental issues facing southern Californians are serious air pollution, water quality problems at beaches and inland waterways, ground water contamination, waste disposal capacity limitations, numerous Superfund sites undergoing clean-up, and potential environmental emergency response needs. EPA's Southern California Field Office provides substantial, local EPA presence in southern California to work with state and local agencies, businesses, non-profit groups, press and news media, and the public to more effectively address these problems.
EPA Staff in the Southern California Field Office work on a variety of environmental programs:
- clean water, including proper management of materials dredged at southern California's ports and management of development that may impact waterways
- preparation of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) that contribute to clean water in streams, rivers, and at beaches
- responding to environmental emergencies that may affect human health or the environment
- press and news media
- criminal enforcement of environmental laws
- cleanup of contaminated groundwater and chromium source facilities at the San Fernando Valley Superfund sites
- air quality and reductions in diesel emissions
- inspections of pesticide production facilities, training of pesticide-use inspectors, and ensuring regulatory compliance for imported pesticides
- develop public and private sector voluntary partnerships for pollution prevention and environmental stewardship
- clean up and redevelopment of potentially contaminated lands
