Seeking Environmental Leaders

Nominations are now open for EPA’s annual Environmental Awards! The awards recognize individuals and groups in the Pacific Southwest who are working to protect public health and the environment – scientists, teachers, citizen activists, young people, nonprofits, businesses, public officials and others.

A Presidential Honor for a Student Environmentalist

The President’s Environmental Youth Awards are given annually to recognize young people across the U.S. for protecting our nation’s air, water, land and ecology. This year, a Fremont, Calif., 7th-grade student was honored for his work to raise environmental awareness through the organization he founded, Green Kids Now.

Progress in Communities

Progress report cover

Each year, near Earth Day, EPA’s Pacific Southwest office publishes an annual Progress Report, featuring the accomplishments and challenges of the past year. This year’s report features stories about cleaner air in Los Angeles and Phoenix, a healthier San Francisco Bay, rising recycling rates in Nevada, better wastewater treatment in the Pacific islands, and safer drinking water on tribal lands.

Improving Protections for Agricultural Workers

Ag workers

EPA has announced proposed changes to the agricultural Worker Protection Standard to increase protections from pesticide exposure for the nation's two million agricultural workers and their families. This is an important milestone for the farm workers who plant, tend and harvest the food that we put on our tables each day.

Historic Settlement to Fund Cleanup of Mines on Navajo Nation

EPA and the Department of Justice have reached a $5 billion nationwide settlement with Anadarko and Kerr McGee that includes funding to clean up abandoned uranium mines on the Navajo Nation. EPA’s top enforcement official, Cynthia Giles, said “EPA’s vigorous pursuit of this case will have a big return for communities across the country.”
