Recycle City: On the road |
They wear out tires and can throw the
wheels out of alignment, resulting in faster wear and decreased gas mileage.
Decrease
wind resistanceFor better gas mileage, decrease the amount of "drag" on the car. (For example, a roof-mounted bike rack increases drag by almost 40 percent.) Carrying heavy items in the car and even driving with the windows open reduces gas mileage.
Keep tires at the right pressureWhen your tire pressure is too low, the tire wears out faster and gas mileage decreases. Tire pressure changes with the temperature. Check tire pressure about once every two weeks and adjust it to the correct level.
Avoid
high speedsFor every mile-per-hour over 55 mph, the average car or truck loses almost two percent in gas mileage, wasting billions of gallons of gasoline in the U.S. each year.

Rotate tires every 5,000 milesTires do not wear evenly on all sides. The condition of your tires affects your gas mileage. By choosing the proper tire for the car and maximizing their useful life with good care, you can help reduce the number of old tires that get thrown away every year.
