Identifying Toxic Releases in a Region using TRI Explorer
- Go to the following Web address:
http://www.epa.gov/triexplorer/
NOTE: This Web address is case sensitive.
- Click on the "Release Reports" tab,
near the top of the page.
- Data can be presented in a number of ways. Click
on "Chemical" to run a search on specific
chemicals.
- Under the section "Geographic
Location",
click on the drop down menu and select "Enter
a ZIP Code"
EXAMPLE: "94804" for Richmond, CA
- Next, under the
Section "Chemical Released", click on the carrot
and select the chemical you are interested in,
or select "All Chemicals".
EXAMPLE: "Benzene"
- Click on "Generate Report".
- Under the section "Geographic
Location",
click on the drop down menu and select "Enter
a ZIP Code"
- After a few moments, you will see a table detailing the amount of the chemical you selected in the specified ZIP code.
Let's now generate information for a specific region according to facilities data.
- From http://www.epa.gov/triexplorer/,
click on the "Release Reports" tab, near
the top of the page.
- Click on "Facility" (in the left
column) to run a search on facilities in a specific
region.
- Under the Section "Geographic
Location", click on the drop down menu and
select "Enter
a ZIP Code"
EXAMPLE: "94804" for Richmond, CA
- Next, under
the Section "Chemical Released", click on the carrot
and select the chemical you are interested in.
EXAMPLE: "Benzene"
- Click on "Generate
Report".
- Under the Section "Geographic
Location", click on the drop down menu and
select "Enter
a ZIP Code"
- After a minute, you will see a list of all TRI
reporting facilities in the ZIP code that you have
selected.
- Now, you may click on any one of the listed
facilities to get a detailed description of what TRI
chemicals have been reported at that particular facility.
EXAMPLE: Select "ARCO PRODS. CO. RICHMOND TERMINAL"
- Scroll down to the "TRI Chemical Trend Table".
The table lists chemicals the facility reported to TRI.
- Under the "On- and Off- Site Releases Trend" column,
select a chemical of interest.
EXAMPLE: "Benzene"
- After a minute, you will see a table detailing the amount of the chemical from the facility of interest

- Go to the following Web site address:
http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/tris/tris_query.html
NOTE: This Web site address is case sensitive.
- Scroll down to the section titled "Geographic
Search".
- Under the Section "City" type
in the zip code of the region you are interested
in. EXAMPLE: "Richmond".
- Next, under the
Section "State" type in
the name of the state you are interested in.
EXAMPLE: "CA".
Scroll to the bottom of
the page and click "search".
- Under the Section "City" type
in the zip code of the region you are interested
in. EXAMPLE: "Richmond".
- After a minute, you will see a list of all TRI
reporting facilities in the city and state that you
have selected.
- Scroll down the page using the arrows on the right
side of the computer screen to see all the facilities
in Richmond, CA.
- Now, you may click on any one of the "TRI Facility ID" to get a detailed description of what TRI chemicals have been reported at that particular facility.
Once you have this TRI report for this facility, you can scroll down the pages of the report for complete information on releases, individual chemicals and to review trends over a period of years.
Other Searching Options
You have the option of using any of the listed search criteria elements that you wish to search by. NOTE: you have the option of only ONE search element or several at a time.
EXAMPLES
- If you want to find out if a facility in your neighborhood is a TRI reporter, you may select a specific facility name such as >BioRad Labs= AND select the city of >Richmond= AND select the state of >CA=, and you will get data for that specific facility in Richmond, CA;
- If you want to find out information on a specific chemical in your neighborhood, you may select Chemical Name Containing >Xylene= AND select the city of >Richmond=, AND select the state of >CA=, and you will get data for the facilities that release xylene in the city of Richmond, CA.
