Toxics Release Inventory: 2006 Data Release

On this page

EPA's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program has released the 2006 data on toxics that are being released to the nation's air, water and land from major industry sectors throughout the United States. These industry sectors include manufacturing industries, which have been reporting their releases since 1987; federal facilities, which started reporting in 1994; and seven additional industry sectors, which began reporting their toxic releases in 1998: metal and coal mining, electricity generation, commercial hazardous waste treatment, solvent recovery, petroleum bulk terminals, and wholesale chemical distributors.

In 2000, the TRI was expanded to include additional persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) chemicals, and required reporting for these chemicals at lower thresholds. PBT pollutants are toxic, persist in the environment and bioaccumulate in food chains, posing risks to human health and ecosystems. In 2001, lead and lead compounds were reported as PBT chemicals for the first time. For information on the PBT rule and the lead rule, including a list of chemicals covered, and links to other PBT Web sites, please refer to the National Toxics Release Inventory PBT Web page.
