2000 UEP Providence
Goals
Back to Providence Goals List >>
The UEP has developed a model for community involvement called the UEP Community Development Pyramid. The model outlines the goals, strategy and infrastructure to be developed in a target city. It relies on the following path to build local capacity and infrastructure to solve urban environment and public health problems:
Providence has completed the first four stages of the Community Development Pyramid and is transitioning into Phase V. UEP started its work in Providence by hosting community focus groups and meetings to understand the most important problems facing residents. These meetings and discussions with local leaders identified lead poisoning and rats as top priorities. In 1995, one out of every three children tested in the City of Providence under the age of six had elevated blood levels. In 1999, blood sampling from children under the age of six had fallen to one in five. This dramatic achievement is the result of years of work by many people, organizations and thousands of hours by our community partners. The UEP and our community partners will build upon the success we have achieved through our objectives for the upcoming year.
Specific Objectives for 2000
- Start implementing recommendations in the Mayor's Safe Housing Lead Task Force report.
- Incorporate ideas from the "Livable Providence 2000 Community Summit" into the City's five-year plan.
- Continue implementing the Special Vacant lot Program and returning vacant lots for productive use.
- Release results from lead in soil sampling on 100 vacant lots in Providence.
