What is Smart Growth?
"Smart growth" covers a range of development and conservation strategies that help protect our natural environment and make our communities more attractive, economically stronger, and socially diverse. Smart growth makes efficient use of land, fully utilizes urban services and infrastructure, promotes a wide variety of transportation and housing options, permanently preserves critical natural resources, and protects architectural and environmental character through compatible, high quality, and environmentally-sensitive development. Inherent to this definition is the implementation of smart growth through comprehensive, consistent and effective policies, regulations, capital projects, and incentives.
