Update

EPA works to protect all citizens, regardless of race, national origin, ethnicity, and income. In FY 2008, EPA awarded four community based organizations in New England for $20, 000 each as part of the Environmental Justice Small Grants (EJSG). The recipients are improving human health and the environment in communities disproportionately exposed to the impacts of pollution.

The Spanish American Union of Springfield, Mass received a $20,000 grant to work collaboratively with partners to raise awareness and reduce health hazards and risks from pesticides for families living in public housing developments.

Rhode Island Legal Services received a $20,000 grant to create public service announcements about green cleaning products and a video educating the public about solid waste and trash in low-income communities.

The Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice received a $20, 000 grant aimed at reducing health effects from air toxics in Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport, Connecticut through education, outreach and capacity building efforts provided for urban residents.

The United Somali Women of Maine received a $20, 000 grant to develop and implement an outreach campaign that will educate the refugee population in the Lewiston/Auburn area of central Maine on healthy homes, lead hazards and pesticide risks.

The Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Cooperative Agreement (EJ CPS) Program is currently under evaluation and the EPA anticipates that the program will continue in the future.

On February 12, 2009, the Request for Applications (RFA) was released announcing the availability of funds and solicitation of applications from eligible entities interested in participating the State Environmental Justice Cooperative Agreements Program.
