Environmental Monitoring

Since assuming responsibility for the site, EPA and MassDEP have continued to sample the ambient air in the vicinity of the site and to have the sampling data reviewed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and Massachusetts Department of Public Health officials.

To date, ambient air monitoring results collected in the vicinity of the site and nearby neighborhood do not indicate a health concern.

EPA, with input from ATSDR and MDPH, has developed an Ambient Air Sampling and Monitoring Plan (PDF) (12 pp., 5.38 MB, about PDF) to occur along with EPA's removal operations. The sampling and monitoring plan has been put in place to protect the health of residents in the vicinity of the site during removal of chemical and hazardous waste materials from the site. It includes sampling the air at the periphery of the site for VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and continuous air monitoring within the boundary of the site during removal operations.  If elevated levels of contaminants are detected within the work area, EPA will assess the work activities to reduce contaminant levels and additional monitoring will be conducted.

ATSDR, along with state and local health officials will continue reviewing the air data collected from the site to evaluate any public health impacts for nearby residents.

EPA will post addition detail and summaries about all air sampling as that information is compiled. Keep checking this web page for updates.
