Overview

For more than thirty years, EPA New England has honored those who have made outstanding contributions on behalf of our region's environment. EPA's Environmental Merit Awards program has honored teachers, citizen activists, business leaders, scientists, public officials and others who have made outstanding contributions on behalf of the region's public health and natural environment. The Environmental Merit Awards recognize outstanding accomplishments during the past year or over a lifetime.

Ira Leighton: "In Service to States" Annual Award

Background

The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC), the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM), the Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA), in coordination with the New England state Environmental Commissioners and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region 1 (EPA) have initiated the Ira Leighton "In Service to States" Environmental Merit Award as a tribute to our long-time colleague and friend, Ira Leighton, who passed away in 2013; after serving forty-one years at the US EPA. Ira's dedication and passion for protecting the environment was evident to all who knew him. He was a constant presence in New England; a force who took ideas and made them actionable tasks that resulted in measurable improvements.

Award Criteria

To honor Ira, the "Ira Leighton in Service to States Annual Award" will recognize an individual or organization that has made significant strides in facilitating state and federal partnerships through innovative sustainable solutions addressing critical environmental challenges in New England.

The successful candidate will have actively demonstrated conviction and leadership in protecting the environment and in promoting sustainable practices.

Specifically, the candidate will have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments and contributions in improving the air, waste, or water environment in New England at the local, state, or regional level. Actions should reflect commitment, demonstrated results, increased awareness, proven public benefit, and improved public policy and/or resulted in more efficient use of natural resources.

Successful award recipients are champions of sustainability and agents for positive change within New England. They demonstrate a record of outstanding performance in leading implementation of sustainable practices and effective environmental management through employment of innovative strategies.

Ira Leighton "In Service to States" Annual Award

Nominate an individual, business, government agency, not-for-profit, professional association, or college/university whose work at the state-federal level in New England emulates Ira Leighton's selfless service. Please complete this nomination form along with a one-page summary of accomplishments, which address the criteria listed below. Supporting material such as news clips and testimonials are accepted. Self-nominations are permissible. All nominations will be evaluated on the information provided (please be as specific as possible).

NEIWPCC, NESCAUM and NEWMOA and EPA Region I will take into account the following criteria when selecting the Ira Leighton "In Service to States" Annual Award recipient.

  • Individuals or organizations promoting unique, innovative, creative, and sustainable solutions, strategies, and practices through joint state-federal partnerships in New England
  • Accomplishments or contributions toward improving the air, waste management, or water environment and/or more efficient use of natural resources in New England
  • Actions that reflect commitment, demonstrated results, increased awareness, proven public benefit, and improved public policy
  • Actions that championed sustainability within New England
  • Record of outstanding performance in leading implementation of sustainable practices and acting as an agent of positive change focused on effective environmental management
