Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England
Barnstable Tanker Truck Rollover
On Jan. 31, 2014, an 11,500-gallon tanker truck rolled over onto US Route 6, spilling 5,000 to 7,000 gallons of home heating fuel oil onto the ground about a half mile from a public drinking well. EPA joined the Mass. Dept. of Environmental Protection (MADEP) and the state Dept. of Transportation at the site. MADEP hired a contractor to cap the tanker and the company responsible for the truck hired a cleanup contractor and a vacuum truck. The home heating oil had seeped into the soil but not reached local waterways. The contractor worked through the night to remove oil from tank and excavate soils. The tanker was towed off site.
Location: Route 6, Barnstable, Mass.
