Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England
Blandford Acid Spill, Blandford, Mass.
On July 27, 2010, a 40-foot box trailer traveling west on Interstate I-90 exited at the Blandford Rest Area after the driver noticed his load had shifted and saw fumes emanating from the trailer. The truck was carrying sulfuric, nitric and hydrofloric acids; also aluminum and waste water. EPA was called in at the request of local and state responders. Responders transferred materials from four leaking totes into secure totes, unloaded the remaining totes from the box trailer and neutralized the spilled acids. EPA and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection coordinated air monitoring to protect cleanup crews and vehicle traffic on I-90. DEP continued to work with the responsible party to determine the final disposition of the box trailer and tractor. DEP also addressed parking areas that may have been affected by the incident. The Blandford Rest Area was reopened July 29, 2010.
