Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England
Norwalk Recycling Fire
EPA New England received a phone call from a resident in Norwalk at 3:30 am Aug. 24, 2008, concerning a fire at an auto recycling facility at 40 Meadow Lane in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood. The site contained tires, crushed motor vehicles and piles of carpets, textile and upholstery components. EPA coordinated with the state Department of Environmental Protection, the US Coast Guard’s Long Island Sound office and the local fire department. EPA mobilized their on-duty responder and contractor personnel to do air monitoring and other support as needed, but at 6 am, DEP reported the fire was out and there was no need for EPA support. EPA and its contractors were on their way when they were told they were not needed and they returned to their respective normal duty locations.
