Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Wakefield Residential Mercury, Wakefield, Mass.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection contacted EPA Nov. 10, 2010 and asked for help assessing a home for mercury contamination. DEP had received a call from the homeowner who had found droplets and a small jar containing elemental mercury while installing insulation in his attic. The jar contained less than one ounce of mercury. The homeowner said he was wearing a protective suit and gloves while installing the insulation. Once he saw the mercury took off his clothes and double bagged them in plastic contractor bags before leaving the attic. DEP and EPA screened the entire home and attic. Screening indicated vapor levels were above the reference action level in the attic and below the reference level in the living spaces. The homeowner agreed to hire a contractor to remediate the attic. DEP helped ensure that the clean-up is adequate.
