Solid Waste in New England

Solid Waste

Recycle on the Go Success Story

Recycle on the Go
Recycling Organics at Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, February 2010 (PDF) (6 pp, 619K, about PDF)
Organics recovery programs are helping the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center save money, feed the hungry, and lower its environmental footprint.

At EPA New England, we are working to reduce the amount of solid waste being disposed through the promotion of source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting activities. Our current areas of focus are reducing and diverting food waste, composting, electronics (computers, monitors, TVs), greening federal facilities, and supporting zero waste communities and businesses. We fund grants and disseminate information to many organizations, agencies and citizens to help make our goals a reality.

Sustainable Materials Management (SMM)
SMM is a systemic approach that seeks to reduce materials use and their associated environmental impacts over their entire life cycle, starting with extraction of natural resources and product design and ending with decisions on recycling or final disposal. This approach changes how we think about environmental protection and recognizes the impacts of the vast amount of materials we consume.
