Solid Waste and Recycling Data

In the Puget Sound Georgia Basin, disposal growth is flat, and recycling, diversion and reuse are growing. The following charts and data were provided courtesy of the Washington Department of Ecology.

Charts and Data

Chart 1: Management of Solid Waste in Puget Sound and Georgia Basin (metric tonnes/tons)

Table 1: Solid Waste Terms Defined
Solid Waste Terms Defined
MSW
Municipal Solid Waste
MSW Disposed
Includes municipal solid waste from residential and commercial sources. BC data includes some other waste types (called inert, demolition, and industrial in Puget Sound, and demolition, land clearing and construction refuse in Georgia Basin)
Other Waste Types Disposed
Quantities from Puget Sound area only (including demolition, inert, industrial, wood, sludges, asbestos, petroleum contaminated soils, tires, medical and other. Some of these waste types in BC are included in MSW disposed)
Diverted
The recovery of materials for uses other than landfill disposal or incineration – includes most non-MSW waste streams, most notable are recycling asphalt, concrete and other construction, demolition, and landclearing debris
Recycled
Includes materials from the municipal solid waste stream that are recovered for recycling. Georgia Basin data includes some construction and demolition materials, that for Puget Sound are included in "Diverted" on this chart
Reused
This is a category that is just beginning to be measured in the Puget Sound area, and with the exception of several local areas, is not measured in BC. It is included to show that there is good work being done to increase reuse programs, yet there is great potential still to be tapped. Includes mostly reused construction and demolition items, some clothing and household items
