The Statement of Cooperation
The US and Canadian federal governments have a unique responsibility
to address the transboundary, transpacific and global environmental
challenges facing the Puget Sound Georgia Basin ecosystem. The
two countries have made national agreements addressing climate
change, air quality and pollution control. Regionally, EPA Region
10 and Environment Canada's Pacific Yukon Region have a long-standing
and successful relationship. Out of this relationship, the Joint
Statement of Cooperation on the Georgia Basin and Puget Sound
Ecosystem (PDF,
11 pp., 2.4MB) was created. It was signed by the EPA Administrator
and the Minister of Environment Canada on January 19, 2000.
Introduction to the Joint Statement of Cooperation on the Georgia
Basin and Puget Sound Ecosystem
We see a special place
where people of all ages can breathe clean air, drink
clean water, swim on clean beaches, and enjoy unparalleled vistas
of mountain, ocean and shore.
where the integrity of wilderness is protected and the
future of forests, wildlife, fish and marine mammals is secure.
where the traditional values and knowledge of the Aboriginal
people of the Georgia Basin and the indigenous inhabitants of
Puget Sound are honored and applied to new challenges.
... where our common goal of sustainable communities embracing
human well-being, economic opportunities and environmental quality
can be realized by todays generations and by those
yet to come.
