Compliance Assistance for Auto Service and Repair Sector

The Region 2 Auto Service and Repair (ASR) Sector compliance assistance program consists of information and technical assistance provided to the regulated Auto Service and Repair Sector and provide help to meet the requirements of environmental law. Region 2 objectives of the Auto Service and Repair Sector site are to:

Facilitate the access to technical assistance that will enhance compliance with environmental regulations

Increase the implementation of pollution prevention techniques and waste minimization processes

It is Region 2 's goal to:

Help the ASR implement find cost-effective ways to "go beyond compliance" in improving their environmental performance.

Provide coordinate workshops and training courses with our state and local counterparts and as necessary, conduct meetings with representatives of the sector trade associations which can enhance the exchange of valuable information that will benefit the regulated community.

The ASR Sector is a sector that can also benefit from the Small Business Policy.

It is estimated that over 35,000 facilities in the region conduct operations under the ASR sector; most of them employing 100 or fewer individuals. The Policy encourages small businesses to expeditiously remedy all violations discovered through compliance assistance and environmental audits.

Activities conducted by Auto body shops are: parts replacement, (radiator, brakes, mufflers, transmission, exhaust systems, tires retreading ) and repair services such as painting or diagnostic services where batteries and oil exchange are waste sources that could be classified as hazardous waste. Many gas stations in the region are also conducting auto repair and service operations.

Some of the waste streams generated by the ASR operations are:

  1. Multimedia pollution sources:
  2. Wastewater waste stream:
    • Used oil/filters
    • Used anti-freeze
    • Used Solvents or gasoline
    • Batteries
    • Contaminated rags
  3. Solid waste / Hazardous wastes:
    • Batteries
    • Tires
    • Rags
    • Absorbents
