Brownfields Resource Directory for New York, New Jersey & Puerto Rico

In July 1996, a federal work group was created to marshal the resources available throughout the federal government in support of brownfields redevelopment. One of the first products of that effort is this Brownfields Resource Directory. The directory contains information about federal and state programs and local contacts to assist in community development efforts, including brownfields resources and programs in related areas such as infrastructure, job training and assistance for local businesses. 	Department of Commerce: Economic Development Administration The administration's purpose is to generate new jobs; help retain existing jobs; and stimulate industrial and commercial growth in economically distressed areas of the United States.
	Department of Commerce: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's mission is to describe and predict changes in the earth's environment and conserve and manage wisely the Nation's coastal land marine resources
	Department of Defense: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers USACE investigates, designs, constructs, and maintains a variety of projects for national economic and environmental security to city state and federal agencies. USACE's primary mission is designing and constructing military projects for the Army, Air Force, Army National Guard and Reserve and other Department of Defense agencies.
	Department of Defense: New York National Guard (Counterdrug Program) The New York National Guard Counterdrug Demand Reduction Program mission is to educate and disseminate drug awareness information through the development of initiatives, activities, councils, youth programs, parent training, and coalitions in order to support community efforts to educate youth and prevent substance abuse.
	Department of Energy: Boston Regional Office The DOE implements a widevariety of programs to promote the adoption of costeffective renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies throughout the region. The BRO is a teamoriented organization, focused around four main sectors of our economy: Utilities, Industry, Transportation and Buildings.
	Department of Health and Human Services: Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry ATSDR was created by the Superfund legislation of 1980 to prevent or mitigate adverse human health effects and diminished quality of life resulting from exposure to hazardous substances in the environment.
	Department of Health and Human Services: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences The NIEHS program gives funding to nonprofit organizations with a demonstrated track record of providing occupational safety and health education in developing and delivering high quality training to workers who are involved in handling hazardous waste or in responding to emergency releases of hazardous materials.
	Department Housing and Urban Development The Department of Housing and Urban Development is committed to focusing attention on brownfields redevelopment and to providing local governments with tools to achieve this goal. The Brownfields Redevelopment Initiative brings together different types of existing HUD assistance that communities can use to clean up and revitalize potentially contaminated sites.
	Department of the Interior, National Parks Service The National Park Service enables states and local governments to establish park and recreation areas and adapt historic buildings for public uses. Through this program, state and local agencies may acquire land and facilities once used for federal purposes at no cost to meet park and recreation needs.
	Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs: Executive Office of Weed and Seed Operation Weed and Seed is a multi-agency strategy that "weeds out" violent crime, gang activity, drug use, and drug trafficking in targeted neighborhoods and then "seeds" the target area by restoring these neighborhoods through social and economic revitalization.
	Department of Transportation: Federal Highway Administration The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) mission is to help f fund the construction, reconstruction and improvement of Interstate highways and other roads on the federal aid interstate, primary, secondary and urban systems.
	Environmental Protection Agency: Brownfields Initiative The goal of EPA's Brownfields Initiative is to empower localities to work with public and private stakeholders to develop locally appropriate approaches to prevent, assess, safely cleanup and sustainably reuse brownfields.
	Environmental Protection Agency: Community Grants Program The Brownfields Initiative and Community Grants Program looks at ways to assist stakeholders/potential grant applicants (e.g., states, local, and tribal governments, private nonprofit organizations, and small communities) in accessing the array of EPA grants available to them and make recommendations which would allow the Region to better address community needs.
	Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) helps ensure equal access to credit, works with lenders and the public to revitalize communities and serves as intermediaries to further fair lending objectives.
	Federal Housing Finance Board Federal Home Loan Bank The Federal Housing Finance Board regulates the Federal Home Loan Bank System. The System is a government sponsored enterprise with the specific mandate of promoting housing and community investment finance.
	General Services Administration The General Services Administration recognizes the importance of property as a catalyst for positive change in urban areas. GSA has committed to review and identify underutilized federal properties under its Brownfields Redevelopment Initiative.
	New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection includes a variety of resources, incentives and programs administered by various state agencies in order to provide a comprehensive tool box to support private and public brownfields revitalization.
	State of New York Department of Environmental Conservation The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has three main functions: natural resource management, environmental quality protection and the promotion of public health, safety and recreation.
	New York Department of State, Division of Coastal Resources and Waterfront Revitalization The Division of Coastal Resources is responsible for administering New York State's Coastal Management Program. In voluntary partnership with local governments, the Coastal Management Program seeks to meet the needs of coastal residents and visitors, while striving to advance economic development opportunities and protect our natural coastal resources.
	Small Business Administration The Small Business Administration's mission is to provide prospective, new or established persons in the small business community with financial, procurement, management and technical assistance. In addition, special emphasis is made to assist women, minorities the handicapped and veterans get into and stay in business.
