The Turnpike Dump site is located between Grand and Aetna Streets in Jersey City, New Jersey (Hudson County). The site is a vacant 16-acre tract of land used for unpermitted landfilling operations until the mid-1980's, which included the dumping of ash, slag, tires, construction debris, drums, cylinders, metal debris (including vehicles) and oils. EPA plans to remove all exposed containers and barrels within the debris mounds under this removal action.
The area surrounding the site consists of commercial establishments, residential dwellings and the Children's and Wilzig hospitals. In addition, the New Jersey Transit Light Rail line extends through a portion of the site.
