Site Description

Hoffman-LaRoche (Roche) Belvidere is located on Maunkachunk Road in White Township, New Jersey. The site occupies approximately 500 acres in Warren County. The facility has been manufacturing vitamins since 1961. Land use in the vicinity of the site is predominantly agricultural, but also includes residential and undeveloped areas.

Potential Threats and Contaminants

Roche conducted an investigation into potential groundwater contamination at the site, which identified leaks in the process sewer lines. Slightly elevated levels of chloroform detected in the groundwater is the only contamination that currently exists. Groundwater contamination is limited to the site.

Cleanup Approach and Progress

Roche replaced and upgraded all broken sewer lines and removed all contaminated soil at the site. The facility installed and operated a groundwater recovery system for about 10 years. The system removed and treated contaminated groundwater under a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) permit. Because of a decrease in groundwater contamination at the site, Roche stopped the use of the system. Roche has since submitted a plan to NJDEP proposing to monitor the natural attenuation processes, which are degrading the remaining groundwater contaminants, and are now vountarily implementing this plan.

Groundwater sampling data has shown that groundwater contamination is controlled on-site and is continuing to decrease to levels just above the NJDEP chloroform standard. Roche has submitted an application for a Classification Exception Area (CEA) for the site to NJDEP for review. A CEA acknowledges that groundwater exceeds applicable standards and therefore, restricts groundwater use. Roche will continue groundwater monitoring until groundwater standards are met for the site.
