EPA MID ATLANTIC REGION LAUNCHES PODCAST SERIES

EPA’s mid-Atlantic region is introducing a series of audio podcasts to bring to a listening audience environmental news and feature stories as well as helpful consumer tips. Called "Environment Matters," the podcasts will be presented regularly on the region’s Web site, http://www.epa.gov/region3/multimedia/ and are available as an RSS feed for automated distribution.

GRANT FUNDS DELAWARE ESTUARY BENTHIC SURVEY

Thanks to an EPA Regional Applied Research Effort (RARE) grant funded by regions 2 and 3, the Delaware Estuary will be able to carry out a comprehensive benthic invertebrate survey on the Delaware Estuary with the help of the EPA Coastal Science Team. The project will include establishing a comprehensive inventory of benthic species and assessing the health of the estuary’s benthic communities. BALTIMORE COUNTY SETTLES UST RULE VIOLATIONS

EPA announced on July 24 that Baltimore County, Md., has settled alleged violations involving a civil penalty of $28,968 for allowing leaks of fuel and hazardous wastes from underground storage tanks (USTs) at 13 county-owned and operated locations.  The county will also be required to install a computerized system at a minimum cost of $90,000 to monitor USTs at several locations . UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA STUDENTS VISIT EPA LAB

A group of students from the University of Pennsylvania's summer program were invited to visit the EPA Environmental Science Center (ESC) at Fort Meade, Md.  The students toured the microbiology, metals, and pesticide laboratories as well as some wastewater treatment plants and Superfund sites. The center also includes areas for organic and inorganic chemistry, biology, microbiology, and other scientific activities. EPA ADDRESSES RISKS OF CARBOFURAN RESIDUES IN FOOD

To protect the public from any risks associated with the pesticide carbofuran in food and drinking water, EPA is revoking the regulations that allow carbofuran residues in food, to ensure the safety of the food supply.  In addition, EPA is proceeding toward cancellation of the pesticide registration to protect pesticide applicators and birds in treated fields. EPA will accept public comments on the proposed tolerance revocation for 60 days. For additional information, visit epa.gov/pesticides/reregistration/carbofuran/carbofuran_noic.htm

EPA "SCIENCE WEDNESDAY" BLOG MAKES ITS DEBUT

Beginning on July 24, the EPA's Greenversations environmental blog will feature "Science Wednesday" to cultivate public interest in environmental science and engineering. The blog entries from EPA staff will give the public an idea of how EPA science and technology protect public health and the environment. GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR CLEAN DIESEL EMERGING TECHNOLOGY

EPA plans to award approximately $3.4 million in grants for projects that use emerging technologies to reduce emissions from the nation's existing fleet of diesel engines. The grants target school or transit buses, medium and heavy-duty trucks, marine engines, locomotives and non-road engines. Grant proposals must be submitted by Sept. 21.
