Our Approach
The Mid-Atlantic Office of Environmental Innovation will serve as a catalyst and coordinator, and foster the development and support of creativity and innovation. As innovative approaches become mainstream they will be transferred to programs outside the Office of Environmental Innovation.
To achieve improved environmental outcomes, EPA's Mid-Atlantic Region has formed “Bucket Teams” with experts from various programs working together toward common goals. Here is a partial list of the "Bucket Teams."
- Preservation & Enhancement of Natural Lands
- Healthy Waters
- Healthy Air
- Partnerships for Community Health
- Energy & Resource Conservation Challenge
Why this approach? Although environmental issues will continue to expand, funding and resources may not. Problems will have to be resolved through innovation and partnering with others.
When this approach will be used:
- significant problems where EPA has limited regulatory authority
- persistent problems where regulations have not been as effective as necessary
- emerging/new environmental issues needing new solutions
Our priorities:
- State & Regional Clean Water Strategies
- Healthy Water Sector Strategies (developed and developing lands, agriculture, mining, transportation)
- Healthy Air
- Energy/Climate Change/Resource Conservation Challenge
- Natural Infrastructure
- Partnerships for Community Health
Innovation Process Model
Larger Size
Our roles:
- Brokers - engaging others to adopt innovative approaches
- Coaches - giving support
- Coordinators - tracking and communicating on progress and linking resources from various programs
- Implementers - project management planning and oversight
