Federal Facilities - Department of Energy
The Department of Energy (DoE) remedial site activities are handled by three empowered work teams that perform oversight function to the DoE sites listed on the National Priority List in Region 4. These sites are the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant [(Paducah, Kentucky), the Oak Ridge Reservation (Oak Ridge, Tennessee), and the Savannah River Site (Aiken, South Carolina). Each team is responsible for implementing an effective and efficient environmental restoration oversight program consistent with the requirements of Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) as amended and the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments (HSWA) under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
DoE is the lead agency for implementing all aspects of the cleanup program pursuant to Section 120 of CERCLA. The role of EPA is to focus on the cleanup and stabilization measures proposed by DoE and ensure timely and cost-effective implementation; evaluate the actions to ensure that such measures are protective of human health and the environment; and that DoE solicits and considers the views of the stakeholder community.
