Site Background:
The Former Sprague Electric Company Site (Site) is comprised of 12 acres located at 1221 North US Highway 17-92, in Longwood, Orange County, Florida. The Site is located in a commercial/light industrial area with a vacant property to the east, an aluminum extruding and painting operation to the south, former General Dynamics, currently Gould Publications to the north.  Dearborn Electronics is currently leasing the property and associated buildings, and operates a film capacitor manufacturing business.  Sprague Electric Company manufactured film capacitors from 1959 to 1992.  After the manufacturing process the capacitors were cleaned with vapor degreasers.  Trichloroethylene (TCE) and Trichloroethane (TCA) were used as cleaning agents in the vapor degreasers.  Groundwater contamination has been indentified in the surficial and Floridan aquifer beneath the site.

Cleanup Progress

The Former Sprague Electric Company entered into a State of Florida Consent Order, dated January 9, 1986, and Consent Order dated December 8 1987, which was monitored and approved by Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).  For more than 20 years, corrective action measures and site assessments have been conducted at the Site.  A groundwater remediation system addressing the both upper and lower surficial aquifers along the northern portion of the property has been operating since 1997.  In 2003 the agency lead for the Site was transferred to the USEPA.  A Remedial Investigation (RI) and Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) were submitted to the USEPA on February 12, 2007.  FDEP and USEPA have completed the review of the RI and HHRA, and submitted comments to the PRP.  Additionally, an Enhanced Biodegradation Treatability Study Work Plan was submitted to the USEPA in December 2007, and field work has begun on the Treatability Study.
