Site Background
The 25-acre Parramore Surplus site, located near Mount Pleasant in Gadsen County, Florida, is a storage and resale company for Navy and Air Force surplus equipment. Beginning in 1972, Parramore began storing drums on the property. The Florida Department of Environmental Regulations (FDER) inspected the site and found 400 to 600 drums, some of which were leaking and killing the vegetation.
The site is located in a low-density residential area with approximately 20 homes in the immediate vicinity of the site. Less than 100 people live within a 1-mile radius of the site. The area surrounding the site is primarily agricultural and forest land.
Threats and Contaminants
The contents of the leaking drums found on the site were analyzed and some were found to contain polychlorinated biphenyls, solvents, and cyanide. Soils that had become contaminated with drum contents were leaching to the ground water.
Site Cleanup Plan
The Record of Decision (ROD) for the site was issued in 1987. From an analysis of all available and pertinent information regarding the site, it was concluded that additional source control remedial actions such as soil remediation are not necessary for the protection of human health, the environment, or ground water.
Cleanup Progress
The potentially responsible parties (PRPs) for the site excavated and treated contaminated soil and conducted ground water monitoring. The cleanup actions have achieved all established goals for surface contamination and the site is now safe to nearby residents and the environment.
Site cleanup activities were led primarily by PRPs with oversight by EPA.
The Parramore Surplus site was deleted from the National Priorities List on February 21, 1989.
