Site Background:
The Woodbury Chemical site located in Princeton, Florida is a five acre site at which the Woodbury Chemical Company formulated, distributed and sold fertilizers and pesticide since 1975. In January 1979 following a toxaphene spill at the site, the Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) found excessive levels of nitrates in drinking water wells located both on- and offsite. In the 1980's and 1990's in addition to the toxaphene-contaminated soils, EPA sampling confirmed that onsite soils contained low levels of pesticides and chromium, while offsite soils contained pesticides and arsenic. Groundwater was contaminated with pesticides, chromium, arsenic and nitrates. The widespread presence of nitrates in the groundwater was linked to the heavy use of fertilizers in the area surrounding the site and the presence of arsenic along the railroad indicated the source was the arsenic-based herbicides that were historically sprayed by the railroad.

Cleanup Progress: Construction Complete:
In January 1990, under EPA's and DERM's oversight, the Woodbury Chemical Company removed the toxaphene-contaminated soil in the area of the spill. In June 1992, EPA's final cleanup decision for the site called for No Further Action for the soil and Monitoring Only Action for the groundwater. No hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants were present above health-based levels. However, because the potential future risk from exposure to the groundwater at the site was close to the level at which EPA may consider taking action, the groundwater at and around the site was monitored quarterly through 1993. The groundwater monitoring demonstrated that the site posed no significant risk to public health and the environment. The site was deleted from the National Priorities List in 1995. No Five-Year Reviews are required for the Site.
