Site Background:
The Cedartown Industries site is a seven acre site which was formerly
used as a secondary lead smelting business from 1978 to 1980. In
1986, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division discovered
5,000 cubic yards of slag material and 32,000 gallons of wastewater.
They also reported high levels of lead and cadmium in the waste
piles and soil. In 1990, the Potentially Responsible Parties performed
a removal action to remove slag, storage piles, wastewater and
sediment. During the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study,
the Potentially Responsible Parties found metals contamination
remaining in the soil and in an isolated area of groundwater. The
site threatens on-site workers and future residents through direct
exposure to contaminated soil.
Cleanup Progress: Construction Completed
A final cleanup decision for the site was made by EPA in May 1993.
The selected remedy is solidification and stabilization of contaminated
soil. In August 1993, the Potentially Responsible Parties entered
into a Consent Decree with EPA to conduct the design and construction
of the remedy. Construction of the remedy was completed in May 1997.
Groundwater monitoring was continued since the remedy was completed
to ensure that natural attenuation of contamination was occurring,
and in 2006 the second Five Year Review conducted for the site found
the remedy to be protective of human health and the environment. The
site was deleted from the NPL in 2006. |
