Site Background:
The Flowood Superfund Site is located in Rankin County, Mississippi.  The site encompasses approximately 225 acres and consists mostly of wetlands and lowlands in the alluvial plain of the Pearl River.  Two manufacturing facilities have operated at the Flowood Site since the 1940's.  The Continental Forest Company owned the northern portion of the site and the Rival Manufacturing Company owned the southern portion of the site.  The site was discovered by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) during a routine industrial water inspection in 1982.  In 1983 the State reported the site to EPA. EPA investigated the site and discovered five areas around the site containing elevated levels of lead contamination.  These areas included the slough/canal area, the small drainage ditch, the wash area, the drainage ditch/Lake Marie area, and the cow pasture pond area.  The site was placed on the National Priorities List in 1983.  The Marmon Group entered into a Consent Agreement with EPA in 1986 to conduct the Remedial Investigation, Feasibility Study.

Cleanup Progress: Construction Completed
The Record of Decision (ROD) was signed in 1988 and was later modified during the Remedial Design to include the following remedy: excavation and solidification/stabilization of lead contaminated soil (approximately 6,000 cubic yards) and sediments with no immediate action for groundwater; moving the material to the designated material placement area located east of the Stone Container company and covering, regrading and reseeding the area.  These actions were completed and the site was delisted from the National Priorities List.  Some initial problems were encountered with the cover; however, these problems were corrected to meet the requirements of EPA and MDEQ.  The first five-year review was conducted in March 1998.   The review found the remedy to be protective of human health and the environment.  The second five-year review was conducted in 2005 and the Five-Year Review Report was signed on January 31, 2006.  This review found the remedy to be protective and that instructional controls are in place.  The next five-year review will be conducted during 2010.
