The Superfund program protects the public and the environment by requiring cleanup of the nation’s worst hazardous waste sites and by taking short-term actions to mitigate immediate threats to human health and the environment. EPA Region 4 Superfund’s cleanup activities include both short-term and emergency cleanups as well as long-term cleanups at National Priorities List (NPL) and Superfund Alternative sites. The Region works closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure the protection of human health and the environment at Superfund and federal facility sites. Region 4 Superfund also works with outside partners to restore Superfund sites to productive uses and ensure that future use considerations are included in cleanup decisions. More Information . . .
Cleanup Plan Proposed for the Sigmon’s Septic Tank Site
On Thursday, July 9, 2009, EPA will host a Public Meeting to explain the proposed cleanup to be conducted at the Sigmon’s Septic Tank Site, located in Statesville North Carolina. The public meeting will be held from 6:30 till 7:30 p.m., at the Celeste Henkel School in Statesville. Oral and written comments will be accepted at the meeting. The public comment period for this Proposed Plan is from July 3 thru August 3, 2009. For more information contact Beverly Hudson-Stepter, the Remedial Project Manager for the site.
Cleanup Plan Proposed for the Sangamo Weston, Inc./Twelve Mile Creek Site
On Thursday July 9, 2009, EPA will host a Public Meeting to explain the proposed cleanup to be conducted at the Sangamo Weston, Inc./Twelve Mile Creek Site, in Pickens, South Carolina. The public meeting will be held from 7:00 till 8:30 p.m., at the Pickens County Administration Facility. Oral and written comments will be accepted at the meeting. The public comment period for this Proposed Plan is from July 6 thru August 5, 2009. For more information contact Craig Zeller, the Remedial Project Manager for the site.
On June 17, 2009, Franklin Hill, Director of Region 4, Superfund Division, presented EPA's "Excellence in Site Reuse" Award to the Town of Arlington, Tennessee. The award was presented for their redevelopment of the Arlington Blending and Packaging Superfund Site as Mary Alice Park. This redevelopment enhanced EPA's selected remedy and resulted in the revitalization of the property and the surrounding neighborhood.
