For more information, contact Keriema Newman, the Remedial Project Manager.

Cleanup Marks Major Milestone at the Brunswick Wood Preserving Superfund Site

EPA began its Remedial Action work at this former wood treating site in June 2007. The remedy selected for this site uses a containment strategy to immobilize site contaminants, including: subcaps consisting of treated soils and sediments over the former creosote ponds at the site; barrier walls at depths up to 70 feet to contain contamination; and, engineered caps to eliminate infiltration through the contaminated soil. Further information on this containment strategy can be found on the July 2008 video at http://www.epa.gov/Region4/waste/npl/nplga/brunwpga.htm. The subcaps were completed in 2008 then in June 2009, a major milestone for the site was reached with completion of the second subsurface barrier wall on the western end of the site. This completes the successful installation of more than 6,100 linear feet of subsurface barrier. Construction of the engineered caps will begin in the fall of 2009. This cleanup has received total funds of $19.6 million to date and is slated to receive $8.3 million in additional funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, primarily to complete cap installation and perform groundwater treatment. For more information, please contact Brian Farrier, EPA's Remedial Project Manager for this site.

Cleanup Nearing Completion at the American Brass, Inc. Superfund Site

EPA continues to make rapid progress on its cleanup activities at the American Brass, Inc. site in Headland, Alabama. Begun in November 2009, the Remedial Action at this former brass foundry has integrated a Triad sampling approach with the use of EPA's Contract Laboratory Program to achieve a quick and efficient cleanup. In June 2009, a major objective of this sampling approach was achieved with the completion of pre-excavation confirmatory sampling of soils and sediments necessary to achieve the cleanup goals established for this site. As of mid-June, 37,000 cubic yards of a total 50,000 cubic yards of soil and sediment have been excavated. While this represents a 20% increase over the initial estimated volume, due to opportunities identified through value engineering, this site is still on schedule to achieve its Construction Completion target by September 2009 with no significant increase in the $5.65 million cleanup cost. For more information, please contact Brian Farrier, EPA's Remedial Project Manager for this site.

New Office of Superfund Public Affairs and Outreach In our recent Superfund Division reorganization, the Office of Superfund Public Affairs and Outreach (OSPAO) was created. As its primary mission, the OSPAO will advocate and strengthen early and meaningful community involvement throughout the Superfund process. To accomplish this, the Office will be responsible for developing, implementing, and directing all of our community outreach activities as required by CERCLA and the NCP. It is the responsibility of OSPAO to: encourage and enable community members to get involved; listen carefully to what the community is saying; take the time needed to deal with community concerns; and keep the community well informed of ongoing and planned activities. Region 4 Superfund Improves Its Website for a Better User Experience
Over the past several months, the Region 4 Superfund Division has undertaken a significant overhaul of its website. In addition to carrying Headline stories describing our current work, we are standardizing the look and feel of the Site Summary pages, as well as adding new content such as videos, podcasts and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds that allow you to receive emails when we add new information to Site pages. One of the most exciting features we have added is a map based selection tool that you can see in the box above on this page that allows you to get information on Superfund activities by clicking on a map instead of having to know the names and addresses of sites. Please contact us with suggestions and visit frequently to keep up to date on how the Superfund program is helping our regional community to provide a safer and cleaner environment for us all. Comments can be mailed to Richard Hammond, Region 4 Superfund Webmaster.

EPA Region 4 and Tyndall Air Force Base To Complete Federal Facility Agreement for Cleanup of the Tyndall NPL Site
Jet takes off at Tyndall AFB
In February 2009, EPA and the Department of Defense reached agreement on completing remaining Federal Facility Agreements (FFA) at nine military bases across the country. Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida is one of the nine bases included in this agreement. Region 4 is currently preparing an FFA to present to the Air Force and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for concurrence. Federal facilities that are listed on the NPL must enter into an interagency agreement with EPA so EPA can determine if a cleanup approach is sufficiently protective of human health and the environment. These agreements, known as FFAs, establish schedules and priorities and enforceable milestones for cleanup activities at federal sites.
