Necessary construction at Countywide Landfill causing odors nearby
August 29, 2008
As part of the ongoing effort to permanently improve conditions at Countywide, contractors are currently digging trenches in the northwestern section of the landfill. Unfortunately, this necessary construction has caused unpleasant odors to be released from the landfill. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is aware of this problem and is sorry that people nearby are being affected.
The construction now underway is necessary to install and expand both leachate and gas collection systems at the landfill. Regrettably, to install these systems, workers must dig down to the surface of the waste, which causes odors to be released. Leachate is liquid mixed with waste. Removing this liquid is a crucial step in reducing these odors.
Once the leachate and gas collection systems are installed and the trenches refilled, a flexible membrane liner will be installed over this uncovered area. EPA feels that the expansion of the leachate and gas collection systems, plus installation of a flexible membrane liner over uncovered sections, are essential steps necessary to address the release of odors from the landfill.
Work on the section of the landfill currently under construction will continue for the next seven to 10 days, depending on the weather. After work is finished in this area, digging in other uncovered sections will be necessary through the month of October. Odors may also be released from time to time during this work.
This work is being required by EPA and conducted under the Agency's oversight. Again, we are sorry this construction is causing odors to be released and hope you will bear with us throughout this important work.
If you wish to report the release of odors, as always, we ask you contact the Stark County Health Department at: (330) 493-9904, Ext. 214
