The Crown Laundry Site is located at 2913 East Washington Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. Crown Laundry operated as an industrial dry cleaner from 1910 to 1975. The property was subsequently operated by ESP Industrial as an electrical services parts distributor and, most recently, part of the site operated as an automobile repair facility. It covers approximately 2.7 acres and contained two commercial/industrial buildings. It is located in a residential and commercial area approximately 1.5 miles from downtown Indianapolis.
EPA first assessed the site in October 2010 and removed numerous 55-gallon drums and small containers of sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, ammonia, acetone, benzene, cadmium, xylene, chromium, lead and other hazardous substances.

The next phase of clean-up has begun at the site now that the former buildings have been demolished by the property's new owner, SEND (Southeast Neighborhood Development). Cleanup, which will take approximately four to six weeks, will involve removing underground storage tanks, sampling and excavating contaminated soil, air monitoring, testing at nearby residential properties for contamination, and disposing of hazardous materials off-site.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency held a public meeting April 14 to discuss the cleanup of the former Crown Laundry site. The purpose of the meeting was to provide details on the cleanup EPA began this month at the site. After a short presentation, there was a question and answer session.
