The DuPage County Landfill/Blackwell Forest Preserve site is located in Warrenville, a western suburb of Chicago. It’s a 40-acre landfill in the 1,200-acre Blackwell Forest Preserve. The forest preserve is an open space containing woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and lakes used for public recreation.

Waste containing volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and metals such as lead, chromium, manganese, magnesium and mercury were deposited in the landfill between 1965 and 1973.

The district cleaned up the landfill according to a 1989 legal agreement called consent order. Another 1998 document called a record of decision, ensured the district would repair the existing cap, enhance surface drainage, install an extraction system, treat and dispose of landfill liquids, install landfill gas venting, continue to maintain and use the 25 existing gas vents, prove tree roots aren’t allowing rainwater to seep through, and monitor the groundwater.
