What EPA is doing

On Dec. 14, 2010, EPA responded to a pipeline rupture at 13803 S. New Ave., Lockport, Ill., that spilled around 21,000 gallons of oil. The pipeline is owned by West Shore Pipe Line Co. and operated by Buckeye Partners L.P.  Oil seeped from the pipeline into wetlands that flow into the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which ultimately flows into the Des Plaines River.

The oil was contained within a few hours of the break and the pipeline reopened in a week. The two companies were ordered to reimburse federal, state and local responders and inspect water supply mains, sanitary and storm sewers, private wells and underground water supplies (ground water) within a half mile of the leak to ensure cleanup.
