Background

The St. Regis Paper Co. Superfund Site is in Cass Lake, Minnesota, on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation adjacent to the Chippewa National Forest. The property was used as a wood treating operation from approximately 1958 until 1985. On Sept. 21, 1984, the site was placed on the Superfund National Priorities List because of contamination of the soil and ground water with dioxin; pentachlorophenol, or PCP; and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. A 1984 study showed these contaminants posed a potential risk to people and the environment. (more...)

Site Updates

July 2014

EPA is conducting a five-year review of the St. Regis site. This is the fifth five-year review of the site.

The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up with waste managed on-site to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. The five-year review is an opportunity for residents and other interested parties to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns.

For an interview or telephone conversation to discuss current site conditions, problems, or related concerns, contact Remedial Project Manager Leslie Patterson (patterson.leslie@epa.gov) 312-886-4904, or Community Involvement Coordinator Heriberto León (leon.heriberto@epa.gov) 312-886-4360.

Wood and Water - EPA's Community Newsletter about the St. Regis Site Cleanup
