Tomah Fairgrounds is a 10-acre waste site that accepted both industrial and municipal waste from 1953 to 1959. After operations stopped, the area was covered and the site became part of the Tomah Fairgrounds. Ground water and soil was contaminated with volatile organic compounds and heavy metals. The cleanup plan for the site is monitoring ground water to make sure contamination naturally degrades and limiting land use with access restrictions.

The EPA has completed the five-year review of the Tomah Fairgrounds Landfill site. The review evaluated cleanup requirements, effectiveness of cleanup, maintenance and monitoring efforts and ways to operate more efficiently. EPA's cleanup of contaminated ground water included a monitoring plan to make sure volatile organic compounds are naturally degrading. The cleanup plan also included limits on use of the site and access to the property. The review found that cleanup continues to protect people and the environment and ground water under the site meets the ground water cleanup goals. Also noted in the review is that waste remains in place without a long-term cover maintenance plan and that unused ground water monitoring wells should be abandoned. EPA recommends Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources develop an approved cover maintenance plan and prepare to conduct well abandonment under Wisconsin rules. The next scheduled review is in 2017.
