October 2009

A decision document on how to clean up shallow ground water and soil contamination has been signed. It explains that ground water polluted with tetrachloroethene, or PERC, will be treated and several homes in the area will be connected to public water supplies. It also restricts access to ground water through local ordinances or deed restrictions.

The decision also addresses homes that have vapors rising up through the ground and entering them through a process known as “vapor intrusion.” A small outdoor system (about the size of a football) will be placed next to these homes to extract air from soil beneath them. Harmful vapors will be vented to the outside where they are harmless.

These options will be done at no cost to homeowners. Residents hooked up to city water would have a monthly water bill but would not pay for the actual connections. Similarly, air venting systems would also be installed for free but residents would see a slight increase in their monthly electric bill.

EPA will design the cleanup this winter. Residents whose homes are in line for a vapor intrusion system and/or public water will be contacted in late December or early January for permission to go onto their properties as well as into their basements. EPA plans to look at basements in late January/early February.
