EPA Reviews Fields Brook Cleanup
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 is conducting a regularly scheduled review of the Fields Brook Superfund site in Ashtabula, Ohio. The Superfund law requires reviews at least every five years to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people's health and the environment.
The Fields Brook cleanup involved excavating contaminated soil and sediment (mud) from Fields Brook and its floodplain and placing the excavated material in an on-site landfill.
The Fields Brook cleanup also addressed six "source control" areas near Fields Brook. These were contaminated industrial areas that had the potential to recontaminate the brook. Source control cleanups were performed at:
- the Conrail Bridge Yard,
- the former Acme Scrap Iron and Metal property,
- the former RMI Metals property,
- the Millennium TiCl4 facility,
- Detrex Corp.
- and in two groups of industrial sewers.
The review is scheduled to be issued by June 9, 2004, and you will then be able to read it at:
Ashtabula County District Library
335 W. 44th St.
Ashtabula
