Background
Republic Steel Quarry (RSQ) is a five-acre water containing quarry surrounded by seven acres of fenced land. Waste pickle liquor and rinse water made up of sulfuric acid and dissolved metal oxides were discharged daily from 1950 to 1975. The selected cleanup plan resulted in the removal of sediment and soils from a drainage ditch and contaminated areas around the edge of the quarry. Cleanup also included ground water monitoring, fish identification, and site restrictions.

Site Updates
2008 Update
EPA completed a third five-year review in June 2008. The review determined that cleanup at the site protects human health and the environment. Fence and warning signs stop residential access and recreational use of the site. Occasionally trespassers access the site and the fence and warning signs need to be improved to discourage this trespassing. Long-term effectiveness of site restrictions will improve with local environmental stewardship.
