- EPA Withdraws Objections to U.S. Steel Water Permit Oct. 15, 2009
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 withdrew its objections to a wastewater permit for U.S. Steel’s Gary Works in Gary, Ind., after the state proposed a revised permit that takes into account EPA’s objections and those of the public - PFOS Chromium Electroplater Study (PDF) (31pp, 847KB)
In mid-June 2008, Region 5 sampled the effluent of chromium electroplaters to determine whether perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was released to wastewater treatment plants. Samples were taken from several Chicago and Cleveland facilities and tested for thirteen perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), including PFOS. Data confirmed that PFOS, along with other PFCs, were being discharged from chromium electroplaters at quantifiable levels. The report of the study is now available. Along with other data, R5’s study will be used by the USEPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards in evaluating the use of PFOS in suppressing hexavalent chromium emissions at chromium electroplaters under air emissions standards for this industry.

Ohio CAFO Program Public Notice
EPA held an open house and hearing and a 60 day public comment period to obtain comments on a proposal to approve a revision to Ohio's NPDES program. The state has asked EPA to allow the Ohio Department of Agriculture to administer the part of the NPDES program that deals with concentrated animal feeding operations. Ohio EPA would continue to administer the program for all point sources other than Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and storm water associated with construction activity at animal feeding operations. EPA is reviewing all of the comments received and will respond to them in a responsiveness summary that will be posted below.
