EPA Region 5 recognizes that increased costs to provide clean drinking water and properly treated waste water is a growing concern shared by states and municipalities. An analysis performed in 2002 estimates that at the national level, the gap between the costs of operating water and wastewater infrastructure systems, and the funds available for that purpose could exceed $500 billion by 2020. Region 5 supports local, regional and national efforts to raise awareness of infrastructure needs and to support best practices.

Upcoming Workshops
Innovative Energy Management Workshop (PDF) (2pp, 279KB), sponsored by EPA’s Office of Water and Region 5, will take place on October 29, 2008 at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Learn how to manage wastewater and water utility’s energy use to reduce costs, to prioritize your energy improvements, and to set measurable energy goals, as well as how to develop and maintain an energy management program. The one day workshop will provide interactive instruction on management systems approaches to reduce energy use and opportunities to learn from experienced utility representatives. Using these new ideas, tools and technical support; you can take control and implement an effective energy management program.
