Sustainable Infrastructure (SI)
EPA Region 5 recognizes that increased costs to provide clean drinking water and properly treated waste water is a growing concern shared by states and municipalities. An analysis performed in 2002 estimates that at the national level, the gap between the costs of operating water and wastewater infrastructure systems, and the funds available for that purpose could exceed $500 billion by 2020. Region 5 supports local, regional and national efforts to raise awareness of infrastructure needs and to support best practices. In July 2008, Region 5 finalized the "Framework to Enhance and Ensure the Sustainability of Water Infrastructure."
