In support of the Water Division's mission,
the Underground Injection Control (UIC) Branch
operates under the broad guidelines and policies of the national UIC
program authorized by the Safe Drinking Water
Act of 1974. The Branch has primary responsibility for preventing
the contamination of underground sources
of drinking water (USDWs) from the injection of fluids underground
to protect the environment and public health of all people in Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Locating Class
V wells (which are mostly shallow underground disposal systems)
is a high priority for the UIC Program. Class V wells that pose
a threat to USDWs must be closed or otherwise addressed to prevent
contamination of ground water (More information).
